Key Components of ABA Parent Education
Understanding ABA Principles
Parents learn foundational concepts such as reinforcement, prompting, and behavior shaping. This knowledge helps parents understand why behaviors occur and how to encourage positive changes.Behavior Management Strategies
Instruction focuses on identifying antecedents and consequences, teaching parents how to respond intentionally to reduce maladaptive behaviors and promote functional skills.Skill Acquisition Techniques
Parents receive training on how to teach new skills through discrete trials, natural environment teaching, and task analysis, fostering independence in daily activities.Communication and Social Skills Support
Education includes methods to enhance language, communication, and social interaction, crucial for improving the child’s overall quality of life.
Social Skills
Kiddos will work on social skills in small-group settings designed to encourage interaction and cooperative learning. Activities will include collaborative play that promotes turn-taking and shared goals, structured tasks that reinforce following group instructions, and cause-and-effect play that builds understanding of how actions influence outcomes. Sessions are guided by trained therapists who provide individualized prompts and positive reinforcement to support each child’s progress and confidence in social situations.
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
Purpose: Identify the reasons (functions) behind a student’s challenging behaviors to develop effective, data-driven interventions.
Process:
Gather background information (records, interviews with teachers/parents).
Direct observation of target behaviors across settings and times.
Define behaviors operationally (clear, measurable descriptions).
Collect data (frequency, duration, antecedents, consequences, ABC charts).
Analyze patterns to hypothesize the function(s) (e.g., attention, escape, access to tangibles, sensory).
Develop function-based hypotheses to guide intervention planning.
Outcome: A written FBA report that includes behavior definitions, data summaries, functional hypotheses, and recommended strategies/next steps (e.g., Positive Behavior Support Plan or Behavior Intervention Plan).
Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)
Purpose: Provide an evaluation conducted by a qualified examiner outside the school district when parents disagree with the district’s evaluation or when additional information is needed for educational planning.
Rights and Process:
Parents have the right to request an IEE at public expense if they disagree with the school’s evaluation; the district must either agree to fund the IEE or initiate a hearing to show its evaluation was appropriate.
The district may set criteria for the IEE (e.g., qualifications of evaluator, location), but criteria must be reasonable.
If the IEE is granted at public expense, the district must consider the results when making educational decisions for the child.
Scope: An IEE can include an FBA component when behavior concerns are central to a child’s educational needs. The independent evaluator conducts assessments, observations, and interviews similar to the district process but with impartial oversight.
Outcome: An IEE report with findings, recommendations, and, when applicable, a function-based behavior plan to inform the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Independent Education Evaluations (IEE’s)
Learning Tree Proactive Therapies offers Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) IEE’s for students who are currently in the IEP process in their schools. These assessments are conducted by our CEO Abbi Chable MA, BCBA. We provide evidence-based FBA services and can conduct independent behavior evaluations or collaborate with families and schools to implement function-based interventions. Our team focuses on compassionate, individualized care, producing clear reports and practical Behavior Intervention Plans to support meaningful progress.
When to pursue an FBA or IEE
Request an FBA when a student’s behavior interferes with learning or poses a safety risk; it is typically initiated by the school team and included in the IEP process.
Request an IEE when you disagree with the school’s FBA or behavioral recommendations, want a second opinion, or need a more comprehensive, independent assessment.
